Gold Price Outlook: XAU/USD Stagnates as Markets Await Fed Minutes

FOREX.com's latest gold note characterizes XAU/USD as neutral heading into this week's Federal Open Market Committee minutes, a window we view as decisive for whether the recent range resolves on a fundamental catalyst or grinds on positioning alone. The setup matters well beyond the metals complex: gold's sensitivity to real-rate repricing propagates through the dollar's funding advantage and, by extension, the cross-asset liquidity conditions that have kept major currency pairs compressed. For FX desks running gold as a macro overlay on the dollar, the minutes are now the swing variable.

What the minutes are priced to do

The FOMC minutes, distributed through Forex Factory, arrive at a moment when, according to Action Forex's reading, the Committee appears to be calibrating its forward guidance rather than signaling a fresh pivot — an exercise the note frames as communicating less without saying less. For gold, that argues against a clean breakout until the text either confirms a hawkish lean in the dissent column or softens the inflation narrative enough to pull real yields lower. Cross-currency, the backdrop is not quiet: Daily Forex's August 18 AUD/USD note flagged the pair as stuck in an uptrend into the same FOMC event, which tells us the antipodean leg is already pricing a relative dovish lean from its own central bank — a setup that magnifies the asymmetry if the U.S. minutes surprise hawkish.

The dollar cross-currents

The minute text's read-through into FX will run primarily through U.S. real yields and the DXY, but the second-order effects on commodity currencies, yen crosses, and the antipodeans deserve equal attention. A dovish-leaning minutes print that fails to lift real yields risks compressing the dollar's funding advantage and re-energizing the risk-on rotation that has supported gold and AUD simultaneously. A hawkish-leaning print, by contrast, would reinforce DXY bid, pressure gold, and likely unwind the AUD/USD uptrend that Daily Forex has been tracking. Either outcome, in our view, narrows the corridor for which FOREX.com's neutral call was constructed.

Levels to monitor

We are watching three things as the text crosses the tape: the spread between the statement's language and the minutes' enumeration of dissent, the Committee's framing of the balance of risks around the dual mandate, and the immediate real-yield response on the 10-year TIPS. For gold, a break above the recent consolidation high on falling real yields would, in our view, validate the long side; a hawkish-leaning print that lifts DXY and pressures real yields higher would, conversely, keep XAU/USD range-bound and reinforce the neutral posture that FOREX.com's analysis already assigns. Through a currency lens, that same binary sets the near-term path for AUD/USD and, by extension, the broader risk-on complex.
